An Oak, William & Mary Lowboy/Dressing Table with original brass and finial, England, c.1680/1700
This is a beautifully executed table with a very gracious overhang and beautifully turned legs which retain their original bun feet, stretchers, and finial. In addition, the brasses are first, so this is quite a rare piece to find in this condition. The surface is an old historic one that has been waxed through the years. The apron is beautifully developed and retains its original edge moldings, etc. Also note the top retains no additional reinforcement; only the pegs that were originally placed for its attachment to the base. Obviously, this table has been very faithfully cared for through the years, and it has come through unscathed. Through many years of shrinkage and aging, note how the top has developed a wavy look--like an old piece of glass--that adds so much charm to this piece. For this type of table, it is the best. (See details, close-ups, etc.)
Note that at one time, the bottoms of the feet were fitted for casters, which were removed as this would have been a later addition.
