Provenance: Ansel Gibbs (b.1773 - d.1835) of Fairhaven, MA: Shipmaster, Merchant, and Justice of the Peace.
Deaccessioned from New Bedford Whaling Museum.

This bed is composed of heavy, dense mahogany, profusely carved on all posts, terminating in magnificent pineapples.  Of particular interest is the headboard, with the classical swag motif done in a provincial manner, as interpreted from desirable New York examples.  The original owner, no doubt, was a man of means and taste and the bed certainly speaks to these qualities.

Over the years, this museum has deaccessioned material of great quality that is not relevant to their mission and we have handled a number of estimable pieces from this source.  Quality-wise, it's the best of the best for the period and has an excellent provenance.

This bed can accommodate three mattress options:
A low mattress between the rails can be up to 75 1/2" x 51"A higher mattress that sits on top of the long rails can be up to 75 1/2" x 60"
A custom mattress with notched corners at the foot can be 80" x 60" (queen size).
