Provenance with Bulckley Family of Newport, RI and Litchfield, CT
This is a monumental inlaid server of the finest quality; it is a masterpiece. Not only is it monumental in scale, but the inlay at the top is the finest of its kind, and rarely seen (see details below). The panels are oval inlays and the convex drawers have a sweeping skirt with inlay at the center, evidencing the great attention to detail throughout its construction. All of the elements are original, with the exception of the brasses, which were cast from period molds.
There are no breaks or alterations whatsoever, and this is impressive, considering the delicate curves of its legs. Obviously a piece always handled with care. At one time, it was handled by the Levy Gallery in New York.
This piece makes a presentation fitting for the Diplomatic reception rooms. There is a related commode by Seymour at the MFA, and of course, a great McIntyre card table with related top at the Peabody Essex Museum. It's that caliber of piece, and we are very proud to offer this in our collection.
