A Rare Painted Maple William & Mary Maple Corner Chair with Double Turned stretchers, New England, late 17th / early 18th century
Corner chairs exist to be found but special ones in fine condition with an older surface such as this are rarities. What draws one to this piece are the cross stretchers which have double sets of turnings on each side. A related armchair in our collection, from Little Compton, RI has similar double turned stretchers, (see sw00999).
There are no breaks or condition issues. Shown below are X-rays of the legs; they are all correct, with no alterations whatsoever. Also, one can see traces of the original red paint beneath its traditional Victorian black. The arms are beautifully tapered and very comfortable for the hand, and, as can be seen, it's had careful wear and use through the years. Currently, it retains an old waxed surface. The webbing is old, perhaps original.
