George III Mahogany Open Lattice Armchair, England, circa 1780

Chairs of this type are quite rare and are sometimes constructed in the Chinese taste with an icicle design configuration.  The arms on this example are beautifully sculpted, while most chairs of this form have fairly plain arms.  These chairs are very rare because few have survived.  This chair is very solid and structurally on a scale to make it substantial; it’s a nice-sized armchair.   Many of these forms were mass-produced and are cheaply constructed of inferior mahogany.   This is a rare period chair in wonderful condition.  It retains an early surface which has been waxed for quite some time.
