A Fine Chippendale style Carved Mahogany Blockfront Kneehole Desk

Scroll down for 10 more photos

While we rarely handle material out of period, this kneehole is an exception because of the virtuosity of construction and materials used.  Note the carved claw and ball feet with shell knees, clearly as good as any period carving.    Kneeholes rarely have claw and ball feet (usually bracket) and it is only wishful thinking to also  expect carved knees (see detail).

Also note the carving of the shell.  It is the best quality one could expect and is fully developed.   The wood is a fine solid mahogany which has mellowed through the years.  This piece was probably made by a master woodworker for his own gratification.

Height: 32 1/2 in.   Width: 39 1/4 in.  Depth: 22 1/4 in.
