A Rare Classical Mahogany Dumbwaiter, Probably New York, c.1815/20

Scroll down for 7 more photos

This is the first classical dumbwaiter we have come by, as this form was phased out in the early 19th century.  There are none illustrated in the Classical literature.  It is exquisitely carved and turned (see detail) with solid ribbon grain dishtop shelving and turned baluster columns supported by a robust vasiform Classical column with acanthus carving.  The legs have carved leafage on the knees, and square boxed paw feet, the leg of which is reminiscent of other New York work.

We have French polished this piece and it is in perfect and complete condition.   It makes a bold statement and is one of the rarest of the Classical forms.

Height: 51 in. Width: 24 in. Depth: 23 1/2 in.
