A Fine Mahogany and Giltwood Federal/Hepplewhite Mirror, New England, or England, c.1790

This is a fine mirror that retains its original urn with wired wheat motif and original carved rosettes with leafage flanking the sides of the mirror frame.   The base has a beautifully conceived traditional pattern. The gold leaf, with its fine incised work around the frame, is also original.

This fine mirror is a tour de force with inlaid patera, and gold leaf floral embellishments. The swan neck pediment which terminates with large rosettes is a holdover stylistically from early Chippendale forms, however, the inlays speak of later Hepplewhite design embellishment, which began to creep in at this time.   Below is a similar mirror of this genre which was exhibited in the 2014 Rhode Island School of design show: Made in America.

Height: 49 in. Width: 19 3/8 in.
