A Masterful Carved Cherry Chippendale Desk/Bookcase, CT, with Full Secret Interior, c.1780

This is a first class desk/bookcase in superb condition and form.  It has beautifully sculptured ogee bracket feet, and not simple flat brackets, evidencing the quality and cost of construction.  (This form of ogee foot requires using very thick chunk of cherry to sculpt from.)

The upper and lower cases are finished by reeded edge fluting terminating above and below in lamb’s tongue carvings.   The interior of the desk is absolutely charming.  The central prospect panel shows stylized inlay work.   It is interesting to note the variegated inlay banding created for the interior.  This desk really gets interesting as the entire central interior pulls out showing it’s secret drawer.  Simply, there are two sets of drawers, and the three on the back are the secret.  Note the fine dovetails, which evidence the quality of the work throughout.   It is simply the best.

The central panels are interesting as the door panels are chamfered on the inside.  It’s a thick piece of cherry.   This is a fine desk/cabinet in fine condition throughout.
