A Fine Mahogany Classical Drop Leaf Table, Duncan Phyfe or Contemporary of Equal Rank, New York, c.1810-20

For the grouping of these drop leaf tables that were produced in New York, this table is probably at the top of the class.  The best of this form has acanthus leaf carving that is very well developed and scooped out under each leaf.  Some have acanthus running completely down the leg, with no reeding, and most have half of each.  Some of these table have reeded urns; others carved with leafage.  What makes this table quite special is that it is fully carved on the ring below the urn and is the only one we know of like this.    The closest we come to this table is illustrated by Albert Sack in Good Better Best (see below).   His does not have the carved ring.   Another difference is ours has crossbanded panels flanking the drawer.       Also of note is that these leaves are elliptically shaped as opposed to a simple square drop leaf. 

What these tables all have in common is the very best of dense mahogany with strong figure.  The condition is excellent with no repairs or replacements.
