A Fine George III Mahogany Ladies' Writing Desk, Chippendale or Contemporary of Equal Rank, England, c.1760-70
For a small compact piece, there’s a lot going on, and of the finest quality, notably workmanship, style, and choice of wood. At this point, there was a notable French influence in England, and pieces of this type were being produced. This ladies writing desk is composed of fabulous dense mahogany. Note the quality of the figure on the top (see image below). This is quite a functional piece with a pull out leather writing surface, side drawer, and retractable cloth curtain. If this weren’t enough, there is even a shelf below. This table is in fine condition.
We arrive at the Chippendale or contemporary designation as, while it is not labeled or stamped, it is indicative of his work. However, there were probably other makers working in this style to Chippendale standards. We just don’t know. But it is a wonderful expressive piece with legs that go on forever.
