A Pair of American Rose Brass Andirons with Claw and Ball Feet, Newport, c.1780

Scroll down for 6 more photos

This is a substantial pair of the best Newport andirons in a rarely seen rose brass.  (For color comparison, we include an image of this rose brass pair next to a smaller yellow brass pair of penny footed andirons.)

The examples with claw and ball feet were the most expensive, produced later in the period, as compared to a similar pair we show in inventory which are earlier and of smaller scale (see sw001994).

A closely related pair of ball topped andirons with coin feet which was exhibited by the Milwaukee Art Museum can be found illustrated in American Furniture with Related Decorative Arts, 1660-1830, by Brock Jobe.  (See scan below.)

Height: 21 in.  Length: 18 1/2 in.  Width: 11 1/4 in.
