A Mahogany Federal Open Arm Upholstered Lolling Chair, Boston or North Shore, c.1800-1810

This was a very popular form but few survive because of the somewhat open style of the arms.  A good example of how these are used is illustrated in the attached views of rooms in the White House Diplomatic Reception Rooms (see below).    Also of note is the serpentine crest on the back and the fluting on the arms and legs (see details).

This chair retains its usable upholstery and we have had the chair all tightened up to original standards.  There are no breaks or alterations.
