A Fine Carved Dense Mahogany Square Candlestand with Ring Turned Fluted Column and Vase, probably Newport, c.1760-80

There is a related pole screen showing matching fluting on column and vase, see American Furniture, Richard H. Randall, Jr. (ill. 122).

The reasons for possible attribution to Newport are the fluted motif at the top of each leg, which is scooped out a bit at its end (close-up).   Also, by virtue of the wood and type of craftsmanship it calls out “Newport” to us.  Either way, it’s one of the best of its type.
