A Magnificent Set of 6 Ebonized and Gilt Baltimore Painted Chairs, c.1825

This set of chairs relates to a grouping produced in Baltimore, which stand out as unique design forms with low Grecian back rests. Note other examples and judge for yourself where this set stands in relation. It has the most interesting rear joint support where the top of the rear legs intersect with the side rails. This circular element is embellished with gilt mounts, of which all remain. It is the only one known with these mounts.
We have had all chairs reglued and reupholstered in an appropriate yellow fabric that contrasts beautifully with the ebony. They retain all their original wood seat frames. There are no breaks, alterations, or replacements. Some parts of the ebony have been touched up for scuff marks and the gilt is all original. This is probably one of the finer sets we have handled. Note the side profile with the splay of the rear legs. …Stylistically, this form is a racehorse.
