A Rare Rosewood Classical Center Table with Original Marble Top, Boston, c.1840
Classical furniture in rosewood is quite rare, as, at that time, mahogany was the imported wood of choice in furniture. Rosewood became available at the end of the first quarter of the 19th century, and is a magnificent wood showing striking ribbon graining that contrasts against a deep red background. Note the table is supported by four classical supports with classical embellishment at the knee. (See detail). The plinth is beautifully shaped and the scrolled feet are of Classic design.
This table is of a desirable, not overly large size, and is shaped more toward an oval than circular, and, of course, finished completely around. We have French polished this piece and it is completely original in all regards, including its marble top, which is often replaced. This center table is a stand-out.
