A Classical Carved Mahogany Two-Drawer Sewing Stand with Full Acanthus Carved Legs, New York, c.1820

This piece is a fine example of the late classical/empire period, complete with its original highly figured wooden basket.   The top is solid mahogany as are the carved supporting columns and feet.  Of note, are the fully carved acanthus legs, with nicely developed paw feet.  The entire table is highly figured with its original brasses and with the extensive carving throughout this base puts this table above many of this form that are commonly seen.  We have French polished the entire piece, and it is a knockout of museum quality.

There is a jelly label on the underside of one drop-leaf.   It appears to read as follows:

"Table from ... A-- Nye / Made by Reuben Curtis Plaut circa 1820 ...'36"

Height: 28 in.  Width: 18 1/2 - 36 in. Depth: 19 in.
