A Diminutive Mahogany Chippendale Chest with Quarter Columns and Cabriole Bracket Feet, Philadelphia, c.1780

The small scale bureau doesn’t come any smaller than this highly desirable 32 inch wide example, which is desirable because it is serviceable as a bedside bureau, as well as in living areas. The colors are of a beautiful yellow sun bleached mahogany with striping throughout. The feet are nothing less than monumental in size. They are quite beefy and original (see images below of its blocking, etc.). The top has a molding around the case it is affixed to, and the top board is beautifully figured, as are the sides. The quarter columns are substantial and the dovetails of the drawer sides show the work of a highly skilled shop.
The brasses are replacements from England, cast from period molds. This is one of the finest Philadelphia bureaus we have handled. The wood is exceptional and of deep quality, with a recent French polish.
