Chippendale Armchair with Elaborate Splat & Icicle Carving, England, c.1770

This is a highly developed Chippendale arm chair of the finest quality.   Note the crest rail with the floral edge carving and the beautiful carving where the crest rail meets the side stiles.   The splat is quite detailed and well-thought out with interlacing woodwork of virtuoso caliber.    We were impressed to see, directly at the center, the icicle motif....it doesn't get better (see detailed images below)! The arms are beautifully scrolled, showing fine wear through time, and the arm supports are elegantly molded under the top of each arm.    The legs have an interesting beadwork at its molded edge with beautifully carved corner brackets at the top of each leg.  Note the seat it rather good-sized and has the desirable serpentine front edge, a quality evoking comfort and commodiousness, as opposed to a straight front.

Looking at the chair sideways, one sees a beautiful rake back on the rear leg.   This is a high style chair of the best quality and dense weight.   It is in fine condition with a tight structure, and it has an old needlepoint seat covering.

Height: 38 in. Seat Height: 17 1/2 in.
Width: 23 1/2 in. Depth: 19 in.
