A Chippendale Mahogany Blockfront Bureau, Northampton or Springfield, Connecticut, c.1775-90

Block front chests coming out of Connecticut are rare and almost all are found in cherry.  This chest is mahogany, which is only found on the finest pieces from the area, as cherry was locally plentiful.  Its small scale width (34in.) makes it very attractive and it makes a bold statement.  The brasses are replaced, and the feet partially restored.   But we feel the positive attributes of this piece outweigh the negatives…and we always think of Albert Sack, probably the most prominent and respected dealer of the 20th century, when he talks of the Venus di Milo, with her arms missing…and this chest, we feel, is certainly in that category.

Regarding the feet, the blocking has been replaced, but the mahogany facings are possibly correct.
