This is one of the finest of the Classical worktables produced in Philadelphia c.1810.  Unlike most of its ilk, the columns are magnificently carved (see details below).  A school of related work tables is illustrated and discussed in a seminal article on this form in The Bulletin of The Cleveland Museum of Art (January 1988).   Rather than rely on contrasting woods, i.e. tiger maple with mahogany for embellishment, this table relies on finely carved columns and beautiful mounts, all of which are original on this table, the brasses notwithstanding.

Also of note is that this is a double lyre pedestal which is more highly desirable, given the transparent lightness of form that it creates.

This table has been French polished and is in showroom condition, and the only one of its type with carved columns.   All four sides are finished.  This truly is a museum quality standout.

Height: 30 in.  Width: 20 in.   Depth: 17 in.
