This is an interesting sideboard, having an attribution to Declaration signer, Charles Carrol, see the 1938 Parke-Bernet listing for this lot, with cover. It seems that this piece was part of the furnishings of the historic Gatsby Tavern sale of Alexandria, VA April 23rd, 1938, lot 150. The Carrolls are probably the preeminent Colonial Maryland family, and Charles one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, etc.
This piece is in superb condition, with its original mother of pearl
inlay and the satinwood as brilliant as it comes. In the late 19th
century, this piece was extensively restored and reworked. Although its
restoration is extensive, we have priced it accordingly, though it
would take an expert examination to find cause to question its later
interior construction et al. To produce this sideboard would cost
twice our price and it is a beautiful piece in structurally perfect
condition, ready for use and makes an outstanding statement. Given what
appears to be its provenance, if this were an untouched antique and
equally grand, it would be a $60,000 - $80,000 piece.
