A Carved Classical Mahogany Settee with Mounts and Brass Inlay on Dolphin Feet, Phildelphia, c.1825

This settee is an absolute knockout. It is a tour de force of the Classical motifs of the day, handcarved and fully embellished. Starting from the top, note the beautiful carved scrollwork cresting a panel of crotch mahogany encased in brass and rosewood borders. The flanking cornucopia are beautifully expressed with fruit flowing over almost reminiscent of the Salem McIntyre school. The arms are wide scrolled of a mahogany that has an old historic surface underlying a current French polishing.
