A Rare Dishtop Chippendale Tilt Top Table, with Reeded Column, Newport, Townsend Goddard School, c.1760

Newport is noted for its elegant yet simplistic design forms.  The shaft here is reeded and makes this table quite special, as most of these tables are just smoothly tapered.  The leg on this table is quintessential Newport, with its small bulbous pad feet.  Typical of Newport, this table does not have a birdcage.  In looking at the detailed images below, one can see the clean surface on the area above the block, where air was not allowed to oxidize the surface around it.  Note the worm damage on the block.  This is the only place this occurs and it tells us this is a real piece with a history that hasn't been refinished over the years...It bears its original first surface, which has turned dark over time.   The top, of course, has been minimally polished and the wood is a heavy, dense, Chocolate brown Cuban mahogany and shows even ribbon graining.

This is a connoisseur's table, who wants an untouched superior example of the Newport tilt top form.
