A Federal Mahogany Lolling Chair, Armchair, Portsmouth, NH, c.1820-30

There is a grouping of these large lolling chairs that came out of Portsmouth, and comparison will show that this is one of the best. The arms are beautifully molded, in addition to the secondary vertical arm support, which is often unturned. While it is a substantial chair, it is not ponderous as in an example illustrated in Portsmouth Furniture: Masterworks fron the New Hampshire Seacoast. It makes a commanding presence and is extremely comfortable and commodious, not to speak of being a fairly rare form seldom found.

Notice the shaped box feet, which are similar to all other models. The mahogany has a beautiful amber aged tone, and is quite inviting.
