A Carved Walnut William & Mary Wainscott/Panel Back Great Chair (armchair), England, c.1660/80

This is an early chair in superb condition. Generally, these chairs have replacements, i.e. a new arm, or a pieced leg, etc. This chair has all of its parts and is the real thing, including it well worn seat. Artistically, this is a beautiful example showing pinwheels, which are remiscient of Connecticut furniture, wherein the pinwheel is the central decorative motif. Attached, please find a dressing table base with the pinwheel motif, which is American, c.1760. Interestingly, the carved motif retained popularity right up through the mid 18th century.

Also, it should be noted that this chair has a beautifully shaped crest as well as incipient wings at the top edges of the chair style. The arms are beautifully shaped, and from the side appear quite stylistic. For related chairs of this genre, are shown in the black and white image below.
