This is an exceptional bureau. Note the beautifully carved bracket feet, which are quintessential Newport. Note the bookend satinwood inlay just above the leg, again, a Newport trait. For another example of this attribute, see the Newport demi-lune card table also in our collection (
sw00691). The brasses are original, and what makes this chest very special is the solid, ribbon grain mahogany used throughout...there are no veneers. Also, note the precise dovetails. The drawerfronts are solid mahogany boards, and the sides and top are probably the most spectacular ribbon-grained mahogany available to be used in the solid...and they are all unjoined single boards.
This chest is one of the best of the transitional federal Newport chests and is in superb condition. Work like this was done by Stephan and Daniel Goddard, among others in Newport at the time.
