This is one of the finest Classical beds we've handled. Not only are the front posts magnificently carved with details above and below an expanse of deep reeding, but, all four posts are also carved. If this weren't enough, the headboard is carved with a basket of fruit, et al. Mention should also be made of the headboard as the inset panel is of a beautiful ribbon-grained solid mahogany board. Earlier beds were quite plain, as they were often covered, as were posts closest to the headboard. This bed was made to be shown; note the chamfered edges of the uncarved posts, which are usually left in their original round state, a welcome instance of "gilding the lily". There are other examples of this type; see the provided scans of related pieces in Colonial Furniture in America (Lockwood) and Philadelphia Empire Furniture, (Boor, & Boor). You will note, from the comparisons to our bed, that these examples are much heavier and later. The posts on our bed are slender, reminiscent of earlier 4-post beds, and probably earlier than these examples.

 In the world of Classical beds, this is one of the finest examples in perfect condition. The testers are later replacements, which is common for these beds. The bed has had no alterations or replacements.
