A Gilt Classical Mirror with Shell Carving, New England, c.1820-30
This mirror has a most unusual finely carved shell, which is quite a standout. We have not seen a shell like this, and it sets this mirror well above related examples of this type, which have the more common carving motif. On all corners, the mirror is blocked with a beautifully gilt carved rosette, all of which are in the original state of preservation, as is the entire mirror.
The mirror retains an old gilt surface and a very pleasing original glass.
The backboards appear original.
