A Fine Mahogany Serpentine Hepplewhite Sideboard of Small Proportions with Superb Inlays, Southern, c.1790-1800

This sideboard has a diminutive feel with a gentle and desirable serpentine front. It has been French polished, and reveals a warm mahogany color. While the general presentation of the piece is understated, the four sets of inlay are truly exceptional. The inlay on each of the legs is boldly modeled, and is striking for its somewhat provincial and/or naive petals with the traditional patera inlays.  Cabinetmakers often acquired these inlays and many come right from England, however the leafage inlays shown here between paterae show the handwork of the cabinetmaker. Woods are Southern yellow pine and oak, so exact location is difficult to pinpoint, other than the main urban centers in the South. Although the Sandwich glass pulls are not original, they are period, and we feel these provide an interesting contrast for this sideboard.
