A Cherry / Bird's Eye Maple Washstand with Scroll Supports, New England, c.1830

This washstand has an original surface and period pulls with contrasting bird's eye maple drawerfronts. Although a somewhat simple form, this stand is far from simple. The scroll supports-not ordinarily seen in this type of piece-are beautifully crafted, and speak to the Pillar & Scroll / Restoration style popular at the time. The more common examples simply have turned front supports, matching the rear supports used here. The apron on the top has its sides dovetailed into the back (see detail). And, the fact that this is done in a canted fashion shows the cabinetmaker's skill and enterprise. It's one of the best of its type.
