An Exuberantly Carved Federal Mahogany Card Table, Salem, Attributed to the McIntyre School, c.1820-25
This card table, which is in a pristine state of preservation, is one of the most exuberant of the form we have handled. Note the triple layered carving on the front legs as this is one carving more than is generally found. The legs are very full and robust, and the carving and clarity of construction carry this table successfully on a beautiful serpentine apron, harkening back to its earlier Chippendale antecedents. The top is composed of solid ribbon grain mahogany, as are the legs.
