An Inlaid Mahogany Hepplewhite Sideboard with Bellflower and Urn Inlays, New York, c.1795-1803

This is an exceptional sideboard in pristine condition. It is fully developed with bottle drawers flanked by convex side drawers, all surrounding small inlaid doors. This model relates very closely to a sideboard handled by Wayne Pratt, Inc. of Woodbury, CT, a furniture dealer known for dealing at the highest levels.  Note the similarity of line inlay within the top drawers as well as lower doors and drawers. The example we show is further embellished with urn inlays which are very rarely found in sideboards as usually bellflowers are about as far as it gets, line inlay notwithstanding. Also, note the oval inlays above the legs. They are very subtle and reminiscent of another somewhat similar sideboard, handled by C.L. Prickett, another highly regarded dealer. Interestingly, Prickett feels their example can be attributed to Baltimore, which may or may not be correct, as this form of sideboard is generally considered in the trade as New York. Interestingly, their sideboard has urn inlays as well, however, with no urns on the lower leg as well as less pronounced bellflowers.

This is one of the best sideboards in our collection, and is a true masterpiece of Federal furniture, made in this country at the turn of the 19th century.
