This is a phenomenal masterpiece. It is composed of dense heavy mahogany, and carved in a masterly fashion. The eagles are finely sculpted, as are the dolphins, which are both classical motifs of the period. The sides of the stand are further embellished with windmills, beavers, and flour barrels, matching the Seal of the City of New York, which suggests use by a New York governmental or public institution. The base is fully embellished with acanthus leaves, bellflowers, etc. Even the upper part of the column is developed. What makes this piece extra special is that it retains its original surface.
