A Fine and Rare Federal/Hepplewhite Ivory Inlaid Mahogany Chest with Spade Feet, Boston, c.1795

This chest is one of the most beautiful examples of the John and Thomas Seymour Boston school of cabinet work, exhibiting many of their characteristic attributes.
This straight front chest of drawers has four graduated drawers, each with a cockbeading which surrounds a lightwood maple banding of light and dark wood line inlays. All are surrounded by finely grained flame mahogany veneers. Each drawer is centered by an ivory inlaid oval escutcheon, and retains its original brass hardware, side-handles, and locks. The rectangular top is faced with a maple banding edged with ebony line inlay on its front and sides. This motif is repeated on the spade feet and skirt which is serpentine in front, and of a half round shape on the sides.
Primary woods: mahogany, maple, ebony.
Secondary wood: pine.
