A Chippendale Carved Mahogany Tea Table, Salem, c. 1770

This is a magnificent tea table in a number of respects.  Immediately, one sees the very fine claw and ball feet.  The claw and ball foot is rarely found on square tea tables, and then only on tables of the highest quality.  And, for Salem, this table represents of the pre-1770 Salem examples extant.   For example, compared to other tea tables, the apron is scalloped, and the scalloped form is typically used on lowboys, chests, etc.  For example, see the walnut Pennsylvania chest in our collection, among others from Newport, Connecticut, etc..

Lastly, is the top, and here, we have an unquestionable first top with first a dramatic overhang.  This gracious overhang is a joy to use, as a work table in front of a sofa.  Certainly, regarding the top, one sees this table has had a history of careful wear.   The feet are oxidized black and have no breaks and alterations, whatsoever.   This is a fine, highly desirable Salem tea table and a prize to own.

Height: 27 in.  Length: 34 in.
