A Diminutive Chippendale Mahogany Drop Leaf Table with Open Talon Claw and Ball Feet, Goddard/Townsend Family, Newport, c.1750/70

This table has been reduced in size.  All parts are original, but at some point the frame was reduced and the top reshaped, making it a small, very handsome table.   We don’t usually handle pieces that have been altered to this extent, however, the open Talon claw and ball feet, on original legs, et al, makes a wonderful statement at a fraction of the price.

Below are several examples of these feet on other pieces, showing the relationship and an open talon table that comes close to the size that we offer.  It is really a Venus di Milo situation, with, in fact nothing missing--just reduced in scale with its magnificent legs untouched.  The legs are what this piece is all about: a signature flourish of probably the greatest American furniture creator working in his golden period.

Height: 27 1/2 in.  Width: 37 3/4 in. Depth: 17 in. - 45 in.
