A Mahogany Pembroke Table attributed to John Shaw, Annapolis, Maryland, c. 1800

This piece is composed of the most vibrant figured mahogany.  The leaves are beautifully shaped in a serpentine form with canted edges.  There are no joined boards; all is of the solid.

This piece is attributed to John Shaw and there are several examples of his work noted in the scans below.   Shaw was a high level cabinetmaker of great repute and his work clearly shows it, not only in the craftsmanship, but in the magnificent wood he chose to work with.   One of the traits that indicate Shaw’s work is the elongated sides of the drawer.   Also note, the sides of the table, which are extremely thick and constructed with four oak leaf supports that appear on his tables.  The use of four shaped supports as opposed to the ordinary two perfunctory flaps on a Pembroke Table are a mark of a high level maker.

This table has no alterations or repairs.    Shaw was a celebrated maker of his time, and this table certainly lives up to that reputation.
