A Fine Mahogany Chippendale Claw and Ball Corner Chair, New York, c.1780

This is a very fine corner chair, typical to one exhibited at Winterthur, see below.   It’s easy to see why Winterthur would choose a corner chair like this, as it’s a rarity to find them with claw and ball feet.   It’s the carving of the claw and balls that first tell you its probably New York, and the carving on the knees, which was reserved for the very best of these chairs, is finely executed.   This chair is of comfortable size, with a quintessential owl’s eye splat.  The fabric is a new Chinese silk damask.

This chair is in superb condition.  It belongs with the best of American furniture, or as a single stand-alone chair in a bedroom or stylish office.

Height: 32 1/2in. Seat Height: 17 1/2in.  Width: 31in. Depth: 27in.
