A Very Rare Carved Mahogany Tripod-Based Original Telescope with First Surface, Salem, c.1810

The column of the tripod is developed with a carved urn, ring turnings, and a diminishing spiral design. Saber legs are embellished with sharp acanthus molding and terminate in paw feet above wooden ball supports. The telescope tin and brass are in working condition.
A gentleman or lady would keep this very rare form in his or her best room overlooking the bay, so that quick identification at the horizon could be made. This probably originates in the North Shore area, based on the leaf carving on the urn shaft and the style of foot.
