A Classical Carved Curly Maple Tilt-top Candlestand, New York state, Possibly Albany, c. 1815

This table has an oblong top with scalloped edges that tilts above an acanthus-carved and ring-turned vase form.  Its downturned legs have an upper acanthus-carved edge and the sides are carved with acorns and leaves.  The legs end in scrolled feet.

While the execution and carving of this piece are as good as any city example, the choice of wood and acorn carvings are distinctly country and relate to work done in Albany.  Its brilliant maple, carvings, and proportion, make this table a vigorous and profound piece.
