A Classical Brass Inlaid Mahogany Worktable with Inlaid Game Board, c. 1820-1830, ex. John Walton

The form looks to Greek Classical design with its stylized cradle support for the upper case.  It relates to a slightly earlier piece in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (see below) which uses a highly carved saber leg in lieu of the “Empire” paw leg that came into style and describes what we see as being classically Greek with a symmetrical concave plinth.  Note the brass inlay at the base which is inset into highly figured mahogany.   Also, note it is finished on all sides, the back including faux drawer fronts, with matching pulls, etc.  It’s a sophisticated piece of quality composition.

This game table retains all its original wood details, and there are no repairs or restorations.  Note the fabric on the basket, which is often seen on the sofas of the former Clinton White house.  It’s a pale yellow on a bright red stripe.  (Needless to say, we bought ours on a close-out back then!)

Height: 29 in.  Depth: 17 1/2 in.  Width: 30 1/2 in.
