A Classical Over-Mantel Mirror, Probably New York, c. 1805-1815
This mirror is architectural in its statement with a
pitched pediment Parthenon form and free-standing fully developed columns. The
gable of the pediment top is developed with architectural corbels and balls.
The center frieze depicts a reclining woman with a scythe in her hand, wheat to
her left, and children to her right. The original glass is divided into three
sections; a large center glass flanked by two smaller glasses, each of which is
partitioned by a three-dimensional Ionic column.
