A Fine and Rare Classical Carved Parcel-Gilt, Stenciled Mahogany Marble-Top Pier Table, Attributed to J. & J. W. Meeks or Robert Fisher, New York, c.1825
This is an outstanding
pier table that makes a very strong statement, using
many of the bells and whistles of the classical style.
It is simply the best of its type. Note the strong
paw feet and the acanthus carving above, and this
is as good as it gets. Also note the fully developed
capitals above the desirable marble columns, also,
note the original ormolu mounts. Also, of note is
the marble top, which is absolutely original…few
survive unbroken.
Lastly, please find below an image of the famous Joseph Meeks and Sons secretary
at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which has been reattributed to Robert Fisher (1824-1837), based on the later discovery of labeled pieces by Fisher, and note the
similarity of lower bases, they are obviously from
the same shop. The updated attribution is reflected on the current Metropolitan Website: http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/3158.
