This bureau is beautifully crafted with a rarely seen upper compartment that is absolutely original to the piece, which is in a fine state of preservation including its original brasses. Backboards of the upper and lower cases match exactly, etc. Note the wonderful broken columns inlaid between the bird's eye maple ovals. Certainly, this is a more provincial look at the work being done in Boston by the Seymours. We think this is probably Saco, Maine school because of the high level of inlay work, and the more provincial design construction of the legs. This piece is a rare masterpiece and is worthy, given its unique design. Note, that the doors open to shelves which flank a set of rather large drawers, which would be excellent for fine small garments, scarves, etc.
