A Rare Pair of Aesthetic Ebonized Cherry Stands, with Fine Rose Medallion Insets, New York, Herter Brothers or Contemporary, c.1890

This is a pair of stands in the Chinese taste as indicated by the incised design on each shaft.  The workmanship is of the finest order with beautifully developed claw and ball feet with a nice high rise, drop finials under each plinth, and a somewhat reeded compressed ball with a balanced turning just under each table top.

The piece de resistance of this piece is the beautifully characterized figural scenes in each of the plates, which are different from each other.  They are finely executed and in perfect condition.

Furniture such as this graced mansions in New York…for example see the feature article in Antiques Magazine, June 2008, pg.100 for related ebonized and incised porcelain inset examples from the residence of J. Pierpont Morgan, etc.
