A Large Figured Mahogany Pier Table with Carved Swans and Marble Top, Southern, c.1820

This large scale pier table-which
can also be used as a serving table because of its
width and large drawer under the marble top-is developed
along highly decorative swans which serve as the front
support columns. Note some of the close-ups and the
interesting swan eyes, with light wood and ebony dots
for pupils as decorative accents.
This table, although classical in form, was used in the main hall of Carter's Grove, the famous Colonial plantation house outside of Williamsburg, VA. Our pier table is illustrated as it stood in the Carter's Grove main hallway in A Treasury of Early American Homes (see scan). Note its functional use in this main hallway which Richard Pratt calls "the finest in America": this classical pier table fitting nicely along with Chippendale chairs, etc. This table, interestingly, retains its original marble top and is in fine condition, having been French polished to bring out the magnificent figured mahogany.
