A Tiger Maple Chest, Rhode Island, c.1780

Scroll down for 10 more photos

This is the quintessential Rhode Island bracket foot tiger maple chest. It has beautiful tiger striping, not only on its front drawers, but also on the sides, of which plain maple is generally used. This was not the economy model: the craftsman obviously had the best solid tiger maple boards in his shop and used them throughout. (The top of these chests never have tiger maple.) Note the tiger striping between the drawers, which often is also of plain tiger.
