A Mahogany and Gilt Metal-mounted Classical/Federal Games Table, Boston, attributed to Thomas Seymour, c.1815-20

This is a finely executed classical card table of the highest quality. The top is composed of solid mahogany boards of magnificent figure (see below). Note the close-up on the apron and the use of curly (or fiddle) mahogany. This is a rare cut of the wood and beautifully executed with a gilt banding below (see detailed image). The saber legs, columns and general form relate to a grouping of documented Seymour card tables, a related example illustrated as Catalog Entry #111 Robert Mussey's The Furniture Masterworks of John & Thomas Seymour. We have communicated with Robert Mussey on this table, and, as he says, "there isn't any real doubt that it is by Thomas Seymour". However, as it is relatively late in his career, we should also note that he was foreman first for James Barker and Isaac Vose, both prominent cabinet shops in Boston at the time.

This is a magnificent Boston card table of the highest standard and would be an asset to any collection of fine furniture.
