A Carved Mahogany Chippendale style Settee after Grinling Gibbons, England, 19th century

There is a mate to this chair currently on exhibit at the RISD museum, in Pendleton House and is illustrated both in their catalog and also in Wallace Nutting's Furniture Treasury , which refers to this as "The Best Settee in America". If you compare it with ours, you will indeed see it is a mate. We jokingly call this a "settee on steroids" as it is one of the most robust and ambitiously carved pieces of early Chippendale furniture and must have taken a great deal of time with great skill to execute.
